The Sanitary Swap

TalloTalk #3: The Sanitary Product Swap

Ola Ladies,

This one’s close to home, especially if you’ve got daughters, like I do.

Like everyone else, I’ve been using mainstream pads and tampons. They’re made with bleached synthetic fibres, fragrance, pesticide-sprayed cotton, and even plastic. All of that sitting against some of the most absorbent, sensitive skin on your body. Every month. For years. Eeek

It’s not talked about enough, but it should be.

The swap?

Choose organic, fragrance-free, and plastic-free period products. No bleach, no synthetics, no hormone-disrupting chemicals, just simple, natural materials that do the job without messing with your body.

Low-tox options to try (affiliate links):

TOTM Organic Cotton Tampons & Pads – made in the UK, super soft, and completely chlorine-free.

Natracare Organic Pads and Liners – biodegradable and plastic-free, with nothing synthetic.

&SISTERS Organic Cotton Tampons and Pads – woman-owned, beautifully packaged, and skin-friendly.

Reusable Period Pants (like WUKA or Modibodi) – a brilliant zero-waste option that’s especially good for teens.

Flo - 100% organic cotton and bamboo.

Bonus swap:

Consider a menstrual cup if it feels right for you. It’s reusable, body-safe, and saves money in the long run. Have to say, this isn’t my cup of tea, but there’s something for everyone.

The big picture?

You don’t have to swap everything at once. But the products we use month after month matter. This is a powerful place to start.

The way I see it, we just need to start small, which is progress, not perfection.

If you’ve found a brand or product you love, please comment - I’d love to hear.
